Blackjack Tutorial: Learn How to Play Blackjack

Blackjack is actually one of the simplest casino games out there and it is the most popular one. You may have heard of the game 21, which is basically the same thing. There are other variations of blackjack known as pontoon, big five and triple sevens among many others. The only difference in these variations are slight rule changes such as having the dealer show both cards or the dealer must hit on 17 and other variations from the classic version.

This tutorial will start off by noting that the game of blackjack provides some of the best odds out of most other games except Craps of course. This means that the house edge is extremely low. Because of the low edge, you can maximize your winnings by building skill and playing the game correctly. The game itself is a very fun and exciting.

Objective to Blackjack and How to Win

It is quite simple, you are dealt two cards facing up and the dealer is dealt two cards, one facing up. The highest score you can possibly get with those two cards is 21. If you don't get 21, then you will be given options such as "hit", where you are dealt an extra card to try improving your hand, or "stand" where you can settle for the hand you have and wait to see if your hand beats the dealer. If your hand scores a total of over 21 after hitting, you go "bust" and lose the bet. The dealer can also go bust as well. You are essentially trying to get a score as close to 21 without going over. Note that jacks, queens and kings are worth 10 points and aces are worth 1 or 11 points.

Blackjack Components

In land based casinos, blackjack can be played with a group of people who sit around a table on one end and the dealer is on the other end. Unlike poker, the dealer is always dealing and you are winning money from the casino, not the other group of people. The dealer is handy since no one likes dealing cards, although it is good manners to tip the dealer after you are finished for a night. There is a "shoe" on the table, which is a box full of cards. Certain variations of 21 have different sized shoes, which can fit one deck, two decks and even up to eight decks of cards. Then there are the betting pieces, which are colorful chips of different denominations of money which are used when making a bet.

Blackjack tables are convenient because the rules to the game are printed on the felt or on a card in plain visible view so you can easily find the right games with the right set of rules. The card usually displays betting minimums and maximums which limit how much money you can bet with. The most universal house rule is a blackjack pays 3:2 or $3 for every $2 betted. A blackjack is a term used for when you get 21 points, usually an ace paired with a ten card. Another common rule is the dealer must draw to 16 and stand on all 17's. Again, some of these rules change for different variations of blackjack.

Blackjack Betting Limits

Betting limits are important. Some online casinos require a minimum bet as low as 10 cents, but commonly it's $1. Land based casinos commonly have a $5 minimum bet, and this can even be higher. Some VIP blackjack tables have minimum bets of $100, $1000 or even $5000. The maximum bet at most casinos is $5000 except for the high roller tables. Online casinos commonly have a minimum bet of $500, which is much lower than land based. However, there are a few VIP online high roller tables available with special betting limits, but they are hard to come by since high rollers scarcely play online.
